My Tuscany

How can one forget growing up in Tuscany? Even a war could not prevail against the magic of that magic place. In those days the charisma of a dictator seduced many young people; they believed his words and tried to obey him. They did not realize that the events would turn out to be much more complex and cruel than they were told. The protagonist of this story was lucky. She experienced hardship, betrayal and loneliness. But the beauty of Tuscany and her search for truth helped her to live, learn, overcome indoctrination and find her way to independence.

The story of a young European’s encounter with the reality of America. It is part memoir and part a hymn to freedom. Each chapter addresses some of her experiences with food, language, customs, and with the issues of ethnicity, racial conflict, and American identity. She travels across the states, is a witness to the changes that have taken place in the country from the 1950s to the present, and reflects on how they have affected her life.

Francesco Ardenghi nasce a metà Ottocento da piccoli proprietari terrieri toscani. Rimasto orfano, perde buona parte dell’eredità ma costruisce casa Rosenna, sua speranza e suo orgoglio, attorno a cui ruoteranno tutti i personaggi. La numerosa famiglia di Francesco e Maddalena s’inserirà nella grande Storia, partecipando agli eventi di una Toscana in trasformazione. I figli Ardenghi, una femmina dedita alla famiglia, il figlio maggiore che cerca di sfidare il destino e poi i fratelli più giovani, vivono ciascuno a suo modo i primi anni del Novecento. Tutti i maschi combattono nella Grande Guerra e ne testimoniano le vicende. Esperienze drammatiche di politica e amore, partenze e fughe, sulla scia di un destino che sembra accanirsi contro gli individui.

Una storia familiare
Campagna e città toscane sono al cuore della storia degli Ardenghi, un tempo piccoli proprietari terrieri. Appassionati e irrequieti, rimangono presi nella rete
degli eventi dagli anni Trenta ad oggi, in un mondo in vertiginosa trasformazione. Rosenna è la casa costruita dal nonno nel tardo Ottocento, che li lega sempre a sé e rimane a testimonianza della loro lunga storia famigliare.
